In fairness that $7 figure includes a few tools, but it's also me cutting corners everywhere I could. You'll notice there's not even siding on it yet, inside mostly unfinished and uninsulated. Pre-covid it probably would have been around $5k. Screws were the biggest unexpected expense; If I'd borrowed or rented a nail gun I'd have saved a bit there. But then it's harder to fix mistakes, of which a beginner makes a lot.
I'm an expert scrounger of materials; if I hadn't been in such a hurry to get it built I'm sure I could have scrounged at least $1k worth of lumber from scrap piles etc. I got all the windows for free on facebook, else that would have been another $800 easy.
For reference, my shed is12x20 with a loft. A lot of people might go smaller.
