Basically when a voyageur got desperate and wanted to cross the wilderness as fast as possible, he would get in his canoe and make a deal with the devil that if he stayed away from churches and any kind of holy imagery, the devil would grant the canoe the power of flight. The consequences for breaking the deal varies from story to story, but it's usually either that the canoe drops out of the sky and kills you or that you can never land and have to traverse the sky being chased by demons forever.
