I was just jumping in because I saw a bunch of inaccuracies--people claiming that pipes never kill people (not true, they cause cancer in a low percentage of users which can kill you), and that cigarettes will always kill you before you can grow old (not true, I know many very old people who smoke). Anything to do with cancer is all about probabilities and you can't make absolute statements like that.
But if your core argument is that pipes are associated with old men solely because other kinds of smoking kill you before you can grow old and only the pipe smokers remain, I don't think that's true. I think pipes are associated with old men simply because they became unfashionable and younger men stopped smoking them. If you look at cartoons or pictures from say the 1960s and earlier you see a lot more depictions of young men smoking pipes. Though it helps that pipe smoking goes very well with sitting around reading or doing other calm things, which old men have more time to do.
