With carp and other species they have tiny mouth openings this makes it hard to remove the hook Unless it's on the lip. The tool helps remove the hook if it's farther down the throat. If you've never seen it before the back of a fish's throat looks like a butt hole. A swallowed hook is going to be pointing out of that hole.
