Waiting around like a pussy and letting the animal suffer just shows your total lack of respect for the animal. Just because you got all excited and took the first shot that presented itself and then fucked it up so much that the animal was able to run away is proof of your incompetence as a shooter, a hunter and a man.
When the animal drops like a puppet that had it's strings cut doesn't mean it isn't still alive and suffering, ending that suffering by either severing the carotid artery or puncturing the heart will put a swift end to it's pain, it's the merciful thing to do.
Also, if you wait that long, the zombie bears might get it first.
