I live in a village in rural Scotland. We've got a community of families that've been here for generations, that grew up together and they mostly all still live here.
I think we could work something out with fishing, stockpiling, farming, some families here have chickens we could breed etc.
The 4 biggest issues imo would be old people, seeing as mabye half of the population here are elderly couples living out the rest of their days in a quiet place. They're lovely people but a lot are getting to the stage where they rely on medicine or can hardly move around. Those without family will be taken advantage of or perhaps forgotten if the church isn't useless they'd probably try to take care of them.
Medicine for shit like diabetes etc will end up with people making poor decisions because their kid/them are gonna die.
Dealing with pets like dogs. Depending on the food situation some or most will have to die and again would force some poor decisions for people who really love their pets.
Religion would be important. I imagine the amount of people dedicated to it would skyrocket and bind people together. People can end up doing "edgy" shit like what was discussed above, rape, slavery and cannibalism. But these acts would really mess up a person's head - well more the cannibalism - I understand people's morals would be more loose and people say they'd do this and that. But actions speak louder than words.
Doing this shit also isolates you from anyone else who isn't a victim if they have any idea of what you're doing.
Call me naive but I have faith in us. Its not going to be a fictional world where we all become monsters.
