Poured concrete to keep the poles straight and steady. The trellis grid is some kind of concrete reinforcement mesh, home depot sells it. I painted the mesh because even though it is perfect with nice big gaps I can reach through it is also uncoated steel and rusts on the store shelf. Twisted on some wire to hold the mesh onto the poles and walla, clean pretty trellis you could probably climb on.
