White light contains all colors and thus is suitable for growing. The reason why "spectrum" became relevant because white LEDs are rather expensive so they tried to make it work with combinations of cheaper colored LEDs. The reason why LEDs even came to table, was because if built nicely they have a vastly longer life and lower power requirement, producing less heat. Sadly Osram, Phillips and various others already built-in a defect in their products so it doesn't even half the life it could so if you buy common LED-bulbs you'd waste your money. So unless you build it yourself or get it from someone trustworthy, you might as well use the cheaper non-LED bulbs and depending on the scale you use them it might take years of usage for it to even reach the inital cost of LEDs.
That said, if you're bigscale (most here aren't) use LEDs.
