I tend to lean toward the older stuff, with all of my bikes pushing 16 years old, but still tip top. My hard tail is a 1999 Schwinn Homegrown Factory Team bike, hand built frame. The only thing that I've changed is a relatively newer Rock Shox SID front with a remote lockout. Else, everything is bone stock.
Just remember that there are plenty of dudes out there who have the newest, sweatest, crippest shit and still ride like asshats. Buy something that gets you pumped and ride the utter shit out of it.
