In the 30's and 50's there were no markets for batoning knives, as people moved to cities and /out/ trades like trapping died out. Besides, back then people were poor and tools were very expensive. This is why batoning knives did not gain popularity at first when it became possible to manufacture them.
Everything changed with mass production. Today you can buy all kinds of knives and axes for different times of the year and different lenghts of trips. People go /out/ for fun and for that purpose a batoning knife is an excellent choice.
If only those fur trappers in the 30's had had a change to get a modern batoning knife for a ridiculously cheap price, but they didn't.
