ok ive been studying for the tech and general tests as well as lurking forums trying to figure out what would be a decent rig if im trying to communicate 0-400 miles away..... I know there are soo many variables blah blah blah but could a yaesu 817 with a dipole antenna (yo yo vee deluxe) potentially reach out that far ? do i need a higher power rig ? say a 50w? or could i potentially figure out tthe rangle and bounce signal to roughly where i want with a 5w transceiver? Ive got 4 others that have jjust started this adventure with me to get Amateur license's and become more proficient with this new frontier of comms for us. want to get the gear and would rather not find out after spending a grand that we would be better suited with a totally different platform.
