Hiking boots are for more than protecting against sprains and injury, which is what most people thing of when they read "ankle support". What they don't consider is how many muscles are involved in stabilizing that ankle and what a drain it is on the body to pump all those extra juices to your calves, thighs and lower back in order to keep you stabilized. Especially so with the added weight of a heavy backpack.
So shoes are fine if you're just /out/ing to pick mushrooms or maybe take your daypack up a hill or whatever, but if you're actually hiking then don't be a dumb-dumb and get a proper hiking boot. Simple as that.
