Gold panning is part of prospecting, which is testing to locate or determine if minerals like gold are present in sediments near or in water courses. Its more a hobby sort of thing, your not going to be finding mountains of gold like you see on "Gold Rush".
That doesnt mean though that it cant be extremely fun to try your hand, especially if your in known gold country! Never hurts to try!
