I prefer shoes to boots in summer, though, for the better footing. the waterproof teva arrowroots from 4 years ago have been good.
for winter i got lucky with a $100 pair of new insulated rocky s2vs from ebay (pic). army people rated them highly.
apparently the weakness is that the sole material wears out quickishly on pavement. if you're just hiking in them, though, not a problem.
try on before buying, sizing with insulated stuff is wonky. they will definitely last 4x longer than REI shit.
