I only ever bother filtering water when there are actual tadpoles or aquatic insects swimming in it. When I do filter water, I use my cotton bandanna purely as a particle filter. You should still choose your water sources appropriately, as this water treatment does not alter the taste (a stagnant pond will always taste like a stagnant pond), but generally you can find running water everywhere.
