If I'm just starting out, is a $10 tarp from Wal-Mart or Amazon going to hold up well enough to learn with, or should I not even bother until I can afford something like an Aqua Quest? I know military surplus is an in between option but I'll probably end up having to repair it since the condition is very hit or miss.
I basically just need something that I can learn with and maybe do a few day trips with rain and / or wind. I'm not going to be far enough away from my house where I'd actually be depending on it with my life, but is it going to at least be suitable for making basic shelters?
