I think is pretty cool. Although SUL gear can get really expensive, lightening your load can make your hike more enjoyable.
This guy and his wife went on a 1,897 mile/ 3,054 km thru-hike with a 6.25 lb/2.8kg base weight (not including food and water) in New Zealand.
