This is a piece of chaga fungus, which is found on living birch trees. You can recognize it by its orange interior, and dark "bark". It looks like a horseshoe from the bottom, giving it the name "horseshoe fungus".
It makes excellent tinder when dry, and can be ground up and made into a tea.
