Racers will usually know their way around an engine pretty well, and when you've got the basic skillset down, small engines are really all the same. Couple of key things to watch for, lots of little tips/tricks through the process, and some of it's just a matter of getting in there and doing shit.
I had no experience with engine repair when I got into powersports. Started riding with guys who used to race, when I had issues they helped me work through them. Now I don't hesitate to split the crankcase on a small engine.
