I've been preparing my gardens and this barrel planter for the coming season. I'm about 3 weeks behind on planting and way behind on indoor starts.
I decided I needed to clean out the compost tube for the planter. This is a season's worth of kitchen scrap compost. The only things not fully composted are some egg shells, peanut shells, and not much else I could identify. It was held together with a vast system of roots from the plants that were in the planter during that season.
I was going to put the compost on the top of the planter to fill it up more, but I noticed 100s of new Lamb's Quarter seedlings (bottom pic) sprouting up everywhere. I'll let them grow and add more soil at the end of the season. This compost will go to my regular gardens.
