It's always been like that though, West side climates (Western Europe, but also California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, even Alaska) are generally more moderate than East side ones (New England, China, Korea) because of the Earth's prevailing West winds at our latitudes and the high heat capacity of water. Means we're stuck with mild, often snowless winters with barren vegetation and cool rainy summers.
