One of my nearby lakes will have smaller largemouth (12"-14") cruising close to shore during the day and it is really hard getting their attention. Right at sunset, the bait fish start to go crazy towards the top of the water with the largemouth chasing them. If I throw a crank or fluke out by the baitfish to try and entice them with a larger meal, they rarely hit it. If I throw a Texas rigged lizard or worm right where the commotion is, the bass will always go for that instead of the baitfish.
I guess when they're chasing the baitfish, they must be in hunting mode. And if a slower, easier target appears a few feet below, they will grab it.
