When I got the CRKT hawk a 3 years ago what I did was thin it out with a belt 1x30 belt sander (keeping it cool with a bucket of water) and then finished it up on water stones. But last year I got a Tormek T8 and with the Ax Jig I resharpened the CRKT a bit thinner on it, and I did both Cold Steel Hawks on it.
But you don’t need all of that... you can just use a rough file and some time to thin it out and then clean it up with a regular sharpening stone or and ax puck. I would recommend stropping to although most people would say it’s overkill for an ax.
