I'm not much of a knife guy, I just carry around an old box cutter and it does 99% of what I want out of a knife. That said, I am an avid woodworker and I have been thinking about making a knife for no other reason than to make a beautiful handle on it. I've been looking around at knife blanks and found one (pic related) that I really enjoy the look of and will work well for what I have in mind for my handle, but it is only available in 9CR14 or a very similar knife in 9CR18MoV which I am given to understand are both less than ideal steels. While this knife would primarily be a show piece, I would like to also be able to use it (because what good is a knife that you can't use) and as such would like to make sure the blade component is good. Will these steels work for general light duty knife blades? I don't plan on being particularly hard on the knife, although I would like it to actually be usable as a knife.
