Is it reasonably warm where you live? Do you mind your ass being a little wet? If yes to the first and no to the second you should consider a sit on top in the 12'-14' range. Capable of lakes, rivers, and oceans. Put some knee straps on it and you can roll it, or just climb back on top.
If its cooler a sea or touring kayak would work, but a skirt is neccesary for even the mildest chop.
Have you considered a solo or 1 1/2 canoe? I've paddled all different kinds of boats from whitewater to touring to sit on top kayaks to canoes of all shapes and sizes and I've come to realize the canoe is superior to the kayak. I love and have both so don't shit your pants, but all isay on the record the canoe is better.
