Here's my solution. Glock 30 (compact .45) cheap holster, muzzle end secure in external ski pocket of Dana Designs pack, belt loop of holster has pack cinch strap running through it, thumb-release snap, easy to grab, secure and protected when I set the pack down. This is my "nuclear weapon," as in I hope to never use it (except a bit of practice), but gives me peace of mind as I travel alone in wolf/black bear country. It is a powerful noisemaker.
