Thr Etowa Mound site in Georgia is another example.
Imagine if you will, a common cultural legacy that radiated out across the entire expanse of the Gulf and into the unsettled areas of the interiors. There were areas of great sophistication and more primitive settlements the further you get from the epicenter. Over time, civilization rose and fell and these people became fractured and lost touch with each other. The Inca, maya, and Aztec were just the most recent expression of that civilization. These groups rose in the 1200-1500AD period, but evidence shows that there were equally or more sophisticated groups but earlier. The modern concept of a uniform linear progression forward assumes that all these people were interconnected. Prior civilizations in the new world were limited to foot travel, so it was likely that any time a great plague or famine occurred, they stopped communication.
