>>1074162Early Sept is actually a great time of year for Northern Montana. If that's close to your route I would head up to Glacier National Park. The crowds will be mostly gone and weather still reasonable. The other parks and forests are great, but this is kind of the ideal 1-2 weeks of the year for Glacier, so I'd go.
Camping would also probably be great and you wouldn't need reservations....but take bear safety seriously. Glacier does have the densest population of grizzly in the lower 48.
