I've enjoyed hiking alone with dogs more times than in the company of people.
Dogs just 'get it', when it comes to hiking around. They don't complain, when well trained they don't get in the way, they are useful, they are always in a good mood, even when the going gets shit and there's no coffee. They are just happy to be outside and travelling with you.
