I know it is sarsaparilla, I've made tea from it, I know the smell, and growing up everyone sort of guided woods tour through the local metroparks or with boyscouts, they've always pointed out this stuff as sarsaparilla with the three shapes of leaves being the easiest way to identify it. Hell, I've been to a factory that makes sarsaparilla tea. But when I just googled it most of the results look like what you posted. I live in NW Ohio for reference.
