You should be looking for some no bullshit billhook. These things have been put to test for thousands of years and they still get the job done.

Personally I'm pretty fond of plain classical billhooks. These tools are well spread within Europe and come in different kind of shape and proportion.
In Northern Italy alone we have many different local models. People have been adapting them for centuries, trying to refine the ultimate tool to cope with local vegetation and specific tasks.
Billhooks are very good at light chopping, cutting branches and clearing brush in general (of course a powered brush cutter is much faster and better for this task).
Anyway, if you are planning some heavy chopping, you'd better take an axe as well with you.
