Also, just because you have nice stuff, doesn't mean you have to loan them out.
If you let your friend ride your motorcycle and he dropped it, he probably wouldn't pay for the broken parts. Same for the knife, unless you don't care if it comes back broken.
Count this as a lesson learned that just cost the price of a knife.
