I see where he's coming from ... it's about 'holding your line'.... continuing in a steady path down the trail. When you hear "BEHIND YOU", that steady path stops, and upon realizing there's a MTB heading your way, the hikers could go either way, or freeze.
The unpredictability of their reaction is what causes an accident; I zig, they zag.
If you're hiking or riding a multiple-use trail, you can expect someone else on there that's exercising that multiple use.
