I only do day hikes, so writing stuff down in a thing that doesn't depend on battery power isn't all that useful for me. On the other hand, if I were camping, it'd be way more useful for me to capture thoughts and things. Even more so if I'm sticking around one spot without having to break camp every single day.
On the other hand, my drawing abilities are somewhere around where Ed Emberley expects his readership to start off, so if I see something cool like a tarantula walking across the path, I'm going to whip out my phone and take a short 4K@60 video of the thing instead of trying to draw pic related
