Some of these mark the path in areas where the trail is too faint, or the trail is easily covered by snow. Or rather, what the cairns mark is the connection between two disjointed paths along a route, which is done to save the hiker time and frustration navigating in poor visibility or at night. Please don't knock these kinds of cairns down.
