You can tell truth from bullshit when it comes to something like basketball pretty easily. People play basketball all the time. If someone told you that the trick is just throwing from half-court, you'd know he was full of shit right away. But prepping is for a situation which either comes up pretty rarely or, depending on the definition, has never come up at all before. It's a little harder to know what works and what doesn't with so little feedback. No surprise people cling to whatever they can find.
It's like self-defense that way, especially by bare-handed martial arts. Lots of people have ideas, but there's just not a ton of information to go off of on what actually works and what doesn't.
