No, they did not. It was already a tradition by then. I don't know when it was started or by whom but people were already doing it by then and possibly earlier. The first guy who thru-hiked the whole trail did so in the 1940s and people started copying his example shortly after. There is a memoir about his experience called Walking with Spring.
