It is a lot more exhausting than you think. I did a 3k ft mtn hike last fall and despite being in above avg shape was really challenged physically. Get on a treadmill and walk 3-4 mph at 8% incline for 2 hrs and you get an idea of a beginner climb. You should be doing an hour of cardio 6 days a week if you want to get serious. It also gets surprisingly technical even on small mountains like the one pictured.
