Light spoons skid the surface, and cheap ones have terrible action. I've found most crankbaits and jerkbaits have terrible action. Cheap plastics are hit or miss, mostly miss. Usually the softer it feels, the better. Beetle spin is probably your best bang for your buck in terms of cheapness. You dont need a lot of things to fish. Just find what works. I have a hundred crankbaits but use only two colors. If your local places have perch, and clear water, you dont need clown colored or purple jerkbaits. If the water you usually fish is always muddy, dark stuff like black or brown works. 90 percent of the fish I catch is caught with ten percent of my tackle. In fact one lure caught 90% of my fish this year. Plus cheap spinners fall apart. I lost a salmon due to cheap tackle.
A good way to get lures is at garage sales or estate sales. Theres nothing 30 something year olds who are still renting
love more than selling their late father's tackle box that holds half a century worth of lures for five bucks that they'll spend on a microbrew. Most of my tackle is either found on tree branches that I climbed or got down with a stick, or from tackle boxes I aquired.
TL;DR, Don't waste your money on cheap shit. Buy a few good lures, and shop around at garage sales.
All of pic related I found along creekbanks. Along with all of my spinnerbaits/buzzbaits, jigs, and rattle raps.
