Nice timing. Having seen The Hobbit, becoming depressed by how bad it was, and then reading Tolkien while drinking, I'm rather wanting to go innawoods with a sword.
However if you're not doing it for reasons like me, you should be taking a gun. Grab an SKS, go innawoods. Pic related. It's an excellent gun, easy to get ammo for, can be used to hunt fairly large game, is accurate, is reliable, isn't too large, and is just a good fucking rifle overall.
