The length of the rat tail matters little past that point anyway, and that's why it was often quite short, with a hole in it, and nailed it to a bronze handle.
Steel was expensive anon, and swords aswell as knives were mass produced, even back then. Full length full width tangs have never been as common as during the 20th century. Or maybe at primitive times, where the handle was just a piece of leather wrapped around an unsharpened part of the blade, but then they made those out of bronze and iron.
