For me it's a matter of getting separated from my vehicle. On the bike it's not as big an issue, although I carry hardly anything on there anyways. But on the sled, I need to be self-sufficient if i'm separated from what I have on there.
While I do carry survival gear on my sled, I have backups/spares in my pack. Things like flares, lighters, food/drink, first aid, rope/trash bags, all my avalanche gear, etc go in my pack.
Fully loaded, my winter pack is over 20lbs.
But i've always ridden with it (not including races), so it's as normal to me as my boots or jacket. In fact, when I race, it takes me a lap or two to get used to not having the weight there.
Pic kinda related, about 75 miles into a 200+ mile day.
