Leaving it as-is makes it a haven for pest insects later on. So, it depends on what crops you are planting as to whether or not you want to leave it or not. Like if you are planting barley as a cover crop then leaving it and planting squash/pumpkin then things will be pretty bad with pests. If you plant corn or peppers instead then it will be just fine (like in this image). Leaving it as-is also helps protect the biodiversity of the area, prevents erosion, maintains better soil moisture, and so on.
