Pitlochry is also a tourist destination but is a good baseline starting point for access into the Highlands. You can take the A9 there and then head off into Rannoch, Loch Tay area or the Cairngorms.
Scotland is pretty empty so once youre outside of typical tourist areas north of the central belt it's gonna be pretty quiet.
Weather can change ultra quick in the Highlands and /out/ists are airlifted all the fucking time... Just sayin.
