I was playing in the dirt for a season before I even dared to venture out on the street. Long enough for things like clutch/shifting, braking/accelerating to become second nature.
Snowmobiling helps a lot too, I bought the bike to stay in shape for the winter riding season. A lot of the skills there transfer to bikes.
A pickup truck and a street-legal dirt bike is about the best bachelor vehicle combination out there. Bike paid for itself in about two years in fuel savings alone vs. driving the truck.
