Malfunctions and failures of equipment are common in diving.
In a cave you can't surface. You may also not be able to rectify your issue due to poor visibility, physical constriction and panic induced by this environment.
Secondly, you are not attached to the guide rope. That is too dangerous. Many cave divers have died from becoming tangled in guide lines.
It is possible to lose the guide rope and become disorientated.
Cave diving and open water diving are not related.
The two british guys who led the rescue operation aren't even certified divers.
This is caving. No amount of open water scuba diving prepares you for this.
