I'm right there with you OP. Just had to call it quits on my PCT hike. I cut the end of my thumb off in a work accident at the start of June. The operation went well and it's healing nicely and the surgeons did that it should be ok to hike, but not sure they understood the nature of thru hike. So I got on the plane, am UK based also, and flew over to Seattle. As soon as I landed I started to feel uneasy about going into the woods with a still heading surgical wound. I got three days in and hitched to a town change the dressing. After seeing the graft I've decided that I'm not comfortable being out here while it's still got a lot of healing left, plus a corner of the graft is starting to go black. So I'm sitting in a small town waiting for my flight home. Hopefully it'll heal up so I can get a shorter hike done in September. It's the right thing to do but doesn't make it feel any better.
