Its main purpose is to scare people, seeing as I often go in Africa in some quite hostile places, and it works. It's the kind of place where a proper man /out/doors has to carry a knife, so that's essentially how you're judged, and as most Africans judge utility based on the looks, they think it's an awesome knife and that I'm fucking badass.
I rarely had to actually use it, either as a small machete, something it's shit at as it's too short and heavy for it, as a poor shovel, or as a pry bar, which is actually the thing it's the most efficient at. It did help me a couple times, but then it's not like I'd have died without it.
If a shovel could scare people, I'd carry one.
