Cartridge really doesn't matter unless you have a major problem.
80 pound hogs will drop from anything.
But once you start getting 350-500 pounders they're up-armored.
Skulls can be 3" thick and their shoulder blade is called "the shield" for a reason.
If you don't care if they run and bleed out in the forest, you can do belly shots with 5.56 all night long.
I've seen hogs run for miles while dragging their intestines behind them.
If you want them to drop where they stand, .308 is the caliber of choice.
I personally use a .50 Beowulf just because I wanted an excuse to buy a .50 Beowulf and I'm in a heavily forested area and shots over 100 yards are nonexistent so the .308 has no advantage here.
