It's an old logger who started his work way back in the day in Scandinavia when logging was still done by hands, hand sharpened tools, and logs hauled out by horse and river. He's a modern logger too, but is critical of the way we currently do things, and laments the attitude of a lot of current loggers towards the forest.
Perhaps some connection to the work is lost, or changed, when you move from hand tools to massive diesel powered machinery. You don't hear the birds singing when you're sawing through wood.
